Hidden Gem + My Favorite Place: Fort Stark State Historic Site

Standard

Today I wanted to share about one of my all time favorite places to hang out & relax on the seacoast. Fort Stark is located in Newcastle, NH just a few minutes outside of Portsmouth and only about a minute drive from my work so I’ve been spending a lot of time there this summer. It is free to go to and there is no signage so only locals really know of it and you can only find our through word of mouth. It offers a lot of coastline, some located on a small beach and some just along big rocks. There is also a rocky pier that juts out so beachgoers & fishermen alike tend to visit. It also has a large grassy area and picnic tables to picnic on and hang out at. The fort itself is crumbling a bit but is still a cool piece of architecture and history. Fort Stark has a visitors center but it is only open on Saturdays from 12-4 so I’ve never been while it’s open. I can talk a lot about how gorgeous and relaxing it is but pictures tell the tale better than I could. On a typical day, I bring some food, coffee, a book or two, and some music and just sit and enjoy the sea air and the views.

Oh and my lunch in the picture above is from The Kitchen (http://www.thekitchennh.com/) in Portsmouth and they have the most amazing sandwiches and salads and also these awesome fried mashed potato balls called spudsters that you can order with any seasoning and any dipping sauce and they are so tasty. I love everything I’ve had from there thus far which includes the Tuscan (in above picture), haddock po boy, roast beef, and turkey club. They also feature rotating salads, and I’ve had the kale salad, brussel sprouts slaw, & sweet potato salad. All totally delicious.

Check out more on Fort Stark at http://www.nhstateparks.org/explore/state-parks/fort-stark-state-historic-site.aspx if you’re interested (and you should be!). It’s pretty awesome.

Fashion Update: Outfits & Favorite Places To Shop

Standard

Today I wanted to share some of my outfits over the past few weeks and share where I got some of the clothes and some of my favorite places to shop. I love to go to the nearby outlets in Kittery and while I love to buy clothes, I don’t tend to spend too much on a single item or buy anything designer or expensive. In fact, I love to shop for good deals & steals.                      IMG_1857

  • Bracelets- Alex & Ani
  • Shoes are very old and not sure where I got them. Necklace was a gift so I’m also unsure.

Thanks for checking out some of my outfits, fashion is a major part of my life and one of my favorite things is picking out items and putting together ensembles & outfits to wear. In the summer I am all about skirts & dresses hence why you see that in almost every outfit here. Now that summer is almost over I will be all about sweaters & boots for fall although I still prefer dresses & skirts to pants any time of year. As you can see, some of my favorite places to shop are Kohls, Old Navy, Express, Maurice’s & Marshalls although I enjoy checking out local stores too.

Day Trips: Portland, ME + Where to Eat: Brian Boru

Standard

My sister & brother in law live in Portland, ME and as it is only about a 45 minute to an hour drive from Portsmouth, it can be an awesome place to go for a day trip or for a night. I’ve been up a few times this summer and have gotten to experience different things every time. On this past trip, I went up with my parents on a Saturday morning as I actually had a rare Saturday off of work (which is very exciting for me)! First we headed to the Portland Farmers Market, which occurs in Deering Oaks Park every Saturday from 7AM-1PM and also on Wednesdays in Monument Square. I’m used to the Portsmouth Farmers Market which is decent sized but the Portland one was huge and offered an awesome array of fresh veggies, flowers, meats, & other goods. There was also some fruit but not a ton. I ended up buying dandelion greens, baby eggplants, sour cherries, & blueberries. Unfortunately, I failed to take any photos but suffice to say, the spread of local products was amazing. Check out more info on the Portland Farmers Market here if you’re interested!

Next, we headed downtown to walk around & stopped in some stores. Although I didn’t buy anything on this particular day, I did manage to snap a few shots of different stores that had interesting or unique products.

Se Vende Imports had some awesome unique, handcrafted jewelry items many of which I really loved. Price is varying; some items were in the $10-$20 range, while others were much more expensive. It is dependent on what exactly the piece is. You can check out more info on them and some of their jewelry here!

The second store I enjoyed was Earthbound Trading Co. They featured a wide variety of products including clothing, jewelry, accessories, home decor, & more. I especially liked their maxi skirts and headbands and they also had very cool backpacks. i would say overall the store has a hippie-chic aesthetic and their website is here if you’re interested. It looks like they have many locations for anyone interested who is not local to the area.

Following our downtown shopping adventures, we headed to Brian Boru for lunch, although we found out when we arrived they were serving brunch still. I am forever a lover of breakfast food above all other kinds of food so this made me happy. We were able to sit outside on the upper deck area which gave a cool view of the water. They were offering $2 mimosas and bloody marys as brunch specials and $4 manmosas, a mimosa in a pint glass so of course I had to partake in a mimosa. I had the corned beef hash, which I thoroughly enjoyed as it tasted and looked homemade instead of like it came out of a can.

IMG_1609

My dad also had the corned beef hash, while my mom & Seamus had the veggie home fries & Melissa had the burger. Everyone’s meals looked good and being able to sit on the deck was a huge perk as it was a gorgeous day outside.

Our next stop was up in Freeport to visit the LL Bean outlet and check out some of the other outlets as well. I am a huge fan of outlet shopping as I live very close to the Kittery outlets so I get over there frequently and I stopped by the Merrimack outlets recently as well Outlet shopping means there are always sales which I am all for.

IMG_1623

The area where the Freeport outlets are located is great for walking around outside and although I didn’t buy anything, I got a good idea of the pricing for backpacks & tents which I am in the market for due to future hiking and camping trips we have planned. Tents are expensive though! We have a camping weekend in Acadia National Park planned for the end of September which I am super excited about and I am debating the merits of buying a tent versus borrowing one from someone.

Some other places I highly suggest checking out if you make a day/overnight trip to Portland:

Duck Fat, which specializes in fries cooked in duck fat. They are so heavenly they make me not want to eat any other fries & they have an array of different dipping sauces you can choose from to accompany them. Also awesome: the pork belly panini and although I haven’t tried any of the milkshakes yet, I plan to and I will report back when I do.

Silly’s, my sister’s favorite restaurant which features so many delicious yet weird sounding dishes. But seriously, if it sounds weird, order it cause chances are it’ll taste great. I can personally vouch for the fried pickles & sweet potato fries. Also receiving rave reviews from friends & family: the big fat greek dinner and the chicken in a boat. Their milkshakes are also to die and they have alcoholic milkshakes (what could be better?). If you have a sweet tooth, I’ve only had it once quite a few years ago but I still remember absolutely loving the cocoa-doodle-doo.

Portland Greendrinks, which occurs the second Tuesday of every month. It costs just $5 to get in if you bring your own vessel and features typically 4 or 5 local breweries who serve beer until they run out. As far as I’m aware, they don’t limit how much you drink although you do have to get there early because they tend to run our fairly fast due to the large amount of people attending.

I’ll be posting again soon with some good places to shop in downtown Portsmouth, a look at one of my favorite hidden gems here on the seacoast, and some details on some of the outfits I’ve been wearing lately & where I buy my clothes. Plus I have a few more restaurant reviews in the works!

Where To Eat: Book & Bar – Portsmouth, NH

Standard

IMG_1738.JPG

This week I finally ate at a restaurant that I’ve been dying to try because it mixes some of my favorite things: food & books & coffee & alcohol. What could be better? So when Bill asked me to come up with a suggestion for where to have dinner a few nights ago, I was very proud of myself for coming up with Book & Bar, a place we have talked about going. They have a fairly basic menu of sandwiches, salads, & a few other small plate items.

I had a tuna melt & Bill had the cured tomato club. I also had the Downeast cider to drink which I loved. It was crisp, refreshing, & gave just a hint of fall. Bill had a dark beer though I can’t remember which one. We both enjoyed the sandwiches which came with fairly large side salads.

IMG_1735.JPG

But by far my favorite thing about Book & Bar is that you are eating your meal in the middle of a real bookstore. They sell both new & used books and they will also buy books from people to resell. And let me tell you, the books were super cheap. I bought The Brothers K by David James Duncan which is a book I once was assigned to read for AP English and loved. I’d since loaned it out to someone and didn’t get it back so when I found it at Book & Bar for only $6, I was psyched. Bill also purchased a book, one relating to Eastern philosophy, something he loves.

IMG_1724.JPG

I am an avid reader & bookstore lover so the experience of being able to browse books & enjoy a good meal all in one was an awesome experience for me. I unfortunately did not try the coffee on this trip so I’ll have to go again & report back when I do.

IMG_1725.JPG

A couple other points of interest: they serve beer & wine but no liquor just FYI if you’re a cocktail fan like myself. They do have a cute little outdoor seating area. It is a casual atmosphere, you order at the counter & then sit, there are couches & comfy chairs to sit at as well as tables. They did have a rotating list of daily specials which looked pretty good and the beers on draft change regularly too. Next time I go, I for sure want to try the coffee and I would also love to try the cheese plate (I may have a slight cheese obsession).

Check it out here!

Until next time,
Kelsey

You can read about the purpose and idea behind my blog anytime on my About the Blogger page but I also wanted to post a little about what is to come here so it’s easier to access until I get some posts up (hopefully today & tomorrow) and then you’ll really be able to see. My hope is that this blog will become a guide of sorts to the seacoast NH area. I plan to post about where to eat & drink (I have a few of these posts in the works already), wear to shop, good sales & deals, fun activities and hidden gems, day trips, where to get the best coffee, etc. As you may have guessed by the blog name, I am a coffee addict, a fashion maven, & dark chocolate is possibly my all time favorite treat. And that’s saying something considering my love of food.

I love a good cocktail as well and am in the process of learning how to make more cocktails which I can hopefully share here. I eat a mostly low carb, low sugar diet and I like to try out a lot of paleo recipes which I will post some of on here too. I’ve just started getting into hiking and am hoping to be able to post some about that too, as well as yoga in the park, spin classes, zumba classes, crossfit workouts, & other fitness topics.

I have a few posts in the works, one about shopping in downtown Portsmouth, two different restaurant reviews/suggestions, and one about different things to do on a day trip to Portland, Maine. Also working on taking pictures of some of the outfits I wear and posting where the clothes are from, etc. Stay tuned for more very, very soon and thanks for reading!
